Gender Studies and Deep History in Maritime Southeast Asia

For the second session of the Austronesian Studies Lecture Series, we are honored to invite Professor Emerita Barbara Watson Andaya from the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.

Professor Andaya has long been dedicated to the research of Southeast Asia, specializing in Christianity and religious change, women and gender in early modern Southeast Asia, and social issues in contemporary Southeast Asia. In this lecture, she will guide us through gender studies and the deep history of maritime Southeast Asia.

If you are interested in gender studies in Southeast Asia or the research of deep history, we warmly invite you to join Professor Andaya’s lecture.

Deep history extends the scope of historical inquiry beyond the limits of written documentation, drawing on archaeology, paleoanthropology, genetics, linguistics, and environmental science to illuminate the distant human past. Historians of gender in Southeast Asia have likewise begun to explore how gendered practices and social formations might be traced further back in time than textual sources alone allow. Although archaeological research has been more fully developed in mainland Southeast Asia, surprising discoveries in the island areas have given "deep history" a new significance. In addition, this presentation argues that the careful incorporation of non‑written materials—images, textiles, objects, and other forms of material culture—can also provide gender studies in maritime Southeast Asia with a deeper temporal foundation than previously assumed.
